I was listening to NPR today at lunch (how very erudite of me), and there was this guy who wrote a book on Afghanistan, and what's going on there now. Of course I forgot the name of his book, but some of the stuff he was saying was verrrry curious indeed.

He says that from 1992 through 1996, the US government was supporting the Taliban because the Taliban had control over southern Afghanistan, and the US government had a brilliant idea of running an oil pipeline through Afghanistan (thereby avoiding Iran et al) and into Pakistan, and then out to the US somehow... They thought the Taliban would be really great "watchdogs" for the pipeline (Isn't that the same idea the Rolling Stones had about the Hell's Angels over there at Altamonte?)

He said something along the lines of the 3 "super" powers (US, Russia, China) wanting to get together (hey, didn't we just do that last week, over this "war on terrorism"?), to become more and more involved in the workings of the government in Afghanistan, in order to - you guessed it - keep the oil prices LOW!!

And, isn't it convenient that Dubya is bestest buddies with Vicente Fox, as Mexico is the country the US gets most of it's oil from (in this hemisphere)???

And, wasn't Dubya the candidate that ENRON got elected to be president??????
